For years, artists, photographers and other creators have been hesitant to upload their images on Facebook and Instagram, for fear of where they will end up. Admittedly, this can be counterproductive as social media is where your work gets the most eyeballs.
Creators can finally rest easy, as Facebook has announced a new Rights Manager for Images tool, available in the Facebook Creator Studio platform, that helps them trace where their images have popped up on Facebook and Instagram, as well as in embeds around the web.
The feature is an extension of Facebook’s existing Rights Manager for videos, and also requires rights holders to provide a copy of which images they wish to monitor, along with a CSV file containing the metadata. Facebook will then run a check across Facebook and Instagram to locate the same content on profiles and pages.
Publishers and creators can then opt to either monitor the image use, block it with a takedown request, or add credit through an ownership link, TechCrunch reports. They can also adjust their control for global or geographical use, and customize access for partners.
Note that the images don’t have to be publicly posted on Facebook or Instagram for the tool to work.
However, the feature is more suited for creators and publishers who own a large collection of intellectual property or who post content regularly. Users who face misappropriations of their work now and then can simply fill out Facebook’s IP reporting form.
