IKEA will be opening its first second-hand store in Sweden later this year as part of its ongoing initiative to become a completely circular business by 2030.
The second-hand store will be in the ReTuna Shopping mall in Eskilstuna, which is reputed as the first second-hand shopping center in the world.
The store will be piloted and re-evaluated from time to time. It will be fully stocked up with IKEA furniture and home furnishings that have been damaged and refurbished.
“If we are going to reach our sustainability goals we need to challenge ourselves and test our ideas in practice,” Jonas Carlehed, IKEA Sweden’s sustainability director said in a statement, per The Local.
In line with its circular model, the company previously launched its renting pilot program in Switzerland, which allowed customers to borrow furniture.
