Google Fonts Redesigns Logo, Adds 2,000 Free Icons To Its Library

An eye-opening move by Google Fonts will be considered icon-ic (sorry) from here on out.
Many might agree that iconography has grown into a language and a means of communication. It is peppered into everyday conversations in the form of emoji, and is sometimes the premise for written characters in certain languages. Google is therefore welcoming icons into its open-source Fonts catalog, recognizing visual language as a close cousin to typography.
The first icons to join the Google Fonts library are over 2,000 open-source Material icons representing common actions. These arrive in five styles—filled, outlined, rounded, two-tone, and sharp—and can be downloaded for free, under the Apache 2.0 license, for any purpose. They can also be installed as a web font.
Google intends to add more open-source icon sets to the Fonts collection in time.
Marking this momentous move, Google Fonts has aptly revamped its logo to signify “greater design flexibility” and the introduction of abstract elements. Previously a simple monogram ‘F’ icon, the branding is now a colorful blend of glyphs and shapes.
Google said it will look to the new logo as “inspiration” to “better reflect our vision for the future of Fonts.”
